Tread Request Form

Stair Treads Canada

Please answer the following questions and submit your request to us.

Q3: Please include your email address and a contact phone number with area code.

Q4: Please select the tread type you are inquiring about.

Please note: Standard Treads and Custom Thick Treads are designed to be installed directly onto your stair frame's stringers.

Full False or Full False Modern stair treads are designed to fit over existing treads or roughed in treads such as one would find when removing carpet from stairs.

Q5: How many treads in total and what wood species do you require?

Specialty woods, ( Ash, Cherry, Jatoba, Knotty Pine, Maple, White Oak or Other ) not being one of our common stocked wood species, ( Red Oak or Birch standard stair treads only ), will need to be priced by our mill shop as they will first need to source the raw materials. Generally speaking depending on the availability of any particular specialty wood species this could take up to (5) business days to complete. Production lead times for all specialty wood orders are generally 4-6 weeks.

Standard Treads Only - Tread Width: 10-1/2 in. wide treads will accommodate a ( run ) size of 9-1/4 in. or less, 11-1/4 in. wide treads will accommodate a run size of up to 10 in. as typically required for all new home construction builds.

Please Note: The tread width for Full False or Full False Modern Treads is determined by the plow size, this plus ( 1-1/4 in. ) being the nosing width equals the overall width/depth size for full false treads.

Q6: What size treads do you require?

If multiple sizes or custom thick treads select that option and enter details below. Please Note: Unless custom thick treads, our treads are sold in standard sizes of 36 in., 42 in., 48 in., 54 in., 60 in., & 72 in., please select the closest size offered that equals to or exceeds your requirements - all treads can be simply cut to size on site.

Q7: If selecting ( Full False / Full False Modern ) treads we require the following measurements.

The existing "riser to riser" width or the ( Run ) as it is referred to, this is then transferred to the ( Plowed ) out area on your full false treads ( please see reference photos below). Do not include any overhang or bull nose widths in your ( Run ) measurement. We recommend measuring a number of your existing treads to ensure tread measurements have consistency throughout.

Our treads have a standard 9 in. plowed area, though these can easily be cut to size on site for smaller plow requirements or we can can make them wider depending on our customer's requirements. Once you exceed a 9 in. plowed area there is an additional cost per tread per each additional inch or part thereof per foot of tread. Current additional pricing starts at approximately $2.25 inch. A full false tread with a 9 in. plow gives you an overall tread width of 10-1/4 in., ( 9 in. Run/Plow + Nosing Width of 1-1/4 in. = 10-1/4 in. ).

We recommend adding an additional 1/8 in. to 1/4 in. to your measured plow size to ensure there is enough width/depth to your new full false tread to account for any fitting issues as not many stair cases are 100% perfectly square and you may get that slight wobble or teeter totter side to side rocking along the back side of the treads where they meet the risers.

Note: To install full false treads it is required that you cut back the existing bull nose ( front edge overhang ) so that the existing treads are square or flush with the existing risers. If open ended treads you also need to trim back any extending side overhangs as well. If applicable we recommend installing all the new risers first and then the treads, in this manner the risers cancel out one another and do not affect your existing ( RUN ) or ( Plow ) size.

Q9: Will you be wanting new risers or the recommended stair trim included with your quote?

Our risers are sold in 4 ft. or 8 ft. lengths only. They are 3/4 in. x 7-7/8 in. and are a good one sided cabinet grade solid veneer core plywood or we have paint grade ( MDF ) risers of the same size available. Generally speaking it is cheaper when shipping 4 ft. lengths vs. 8 ft. lengths which are considered as oversized packaging lengths by most shipping companies.

Typically you require ( 1 ) more riser than you do stair treads per straight run of stairs. As an example, if you have a continuous run of ( 12 ) treads you'll require ( 13 ) risers, if the stairs are split ( landing area etc.; ) then you'd need ( 14 ) or more risers.

Ogee Cove Moulding is a finishing trim used to go under the treads front side where the riser meets the bottom of the stair treads underside, to hide the little 1/8 in. and 1/16 in. gaps that may be there after the install. We definitely suggest getting the trim especially if we are doing the finish to ensure match consistency. Stair trim is not required when going with Full False Modern treads.

Q10: Confirm if " Natural " or " Clear " is the grain face profile you prefer.

Oak is shown in the sample and shows the typical face grain differences. There is a slight up cost for "Clear" profile treads vs. “Natural” profile treads.

Please enter any brief details not covered above. ( ie; Requiring 3 pc. pie shaped winder sets )

WINDER SET TREADS:

Please Note: We do not ship full false winder sets due to their 3/4" body thickness the risk of damage is too great. The alternative is using stair nosing and back filling with hardwood, laminate or tile flooring or going with standard 1-1/16" thick winder sets.

The recommended installation method of our 3 pc. full false winder sets is to glue ( PL Premium ) only the front 6 or 8 inches and the remaining area with clear silicone or left floating.
Reasoning: A 2% moisture change over the seasons results in 0.28 in. of movement across the grain. Due to their size and nature combined with our Canadian climate and the possibility of warping or cracking we do not offer warranty on Winder Sets.

Please advise which way your winder set turns to by looking up your staircase. Also by reviewing the sizing schematics of our winders sets note the size that is sufficient for the overall sizing for your project. Full False Winder Sets are sold in 42 in. or 48 in. sizes as pick up items only and Standard Winder Sets are sold in 48 in. and 54 in. sizes only.

In the stair business a “quick quote” is not always possible due to all the variables that must be accounted for. It is possible, dependent on your answers, that we may still require some additional information to ensure you receive and are properly quoted on the correct sized materials for your staircase project.

We look forward to hearing from you and serving your needs!
